art and words dedicated to the children of Palestine

Letters for Palestinian childhoods

is an online and in-person travelling exhibition of letters, poems, and artwork dedicated to the children of Palestine.

It aims to counter dehumanising narratives about Palestinians, showing solidarity by attending to the names, stories, experiences, dreams, and struggles of Palestinian children and the actions of the Western-backed Israeli state which are so violently shaping their lives.

Dear Friends from Gaza

We are four friends from Poland – Dominik, Monika, Marta and Misia. Even though we are far away from you, we would you like to get to know you and tell you about the place we come from.

There are many red things in our country – during spring we eat a lot of strawberries, they are sweet and tasty. Some people prefer cherries, we can eat them in summer and also put them as jewellery on our ears! Would you also like to play like this someday? During autumn many people in Poland eat apples, we also love to bake an apple pie. What would you like to eat if you could choose anything?

Right now, the landscape in our country is very green. In Poznań, the city where we study, we have vibrant green trams on the streets. The spring has come and now also all the trees have many green leaves! The most popular trees in Poland are oaks, chestnuts, birches and also spruces. Have you ever seen these kinds of trees? What is your dream place to have a picnic with friends? In Poland, when we have picnics, we sit on green grass and then we play volleyball or badminton.

In our country, snow is white in winter, for example on the tops of mountains. Or on a windy day, when waves form on a lake or sea, you may observe white foam in them. And when the sky is blue but not quite clear, we like to stare at the white clouds and observe their shapes. Then we guess what they remind us of: sometimes a lamb, sometimes a teddy bear or an ice cream. Do you like to watch the sky? What are you thinking about it?

Now in Poland, when it is warm, you can see cows grazing in the countryside, in the meadows. They sometimes sit under a tree, look into the distance with their big, wise eyes and chew the grass slowly. Our cows are spotted, white and black. And what are they like in your country? There are a lot of birds in Poland. Some live here all year round. Others fly away to warmer countries for the winter. Many birds are black such as ravens, rooks, blackbirds, jackdaws. Do you know these birds? And which birds live in your country?  Do you like animals? What is your favourite animal?

Within all these different seasons, we play different games here – outdoor and inside our homes. We play such games as hide and seek, we like to play card games, exchange teddy bears and dance to some fun songs. Usually the more of us play, the nicer. What do you play most often? Do you play in a big group or in a small one?

Now, when we look at our red, green, black and white landscape we think about you, dear Friends from Gaza! We think about you, please know that you are not alone! Many people care about you. We imagine playing together with all those colors, vividly inviting us for the craziest adventures, all together. Hopefully real soon!

With warmest regards,

Dominik, Monika, Misia and Marta
